Ashkhabad joined us in 2021 from Tattersalls Sales having been consigned by Boherguy Stud, Ireland. She was bred by Stall Parthenaue in Ireland and was purchased as a yearling at Tattersalls by Stauffenberg Bloodstock and heading to Germany and then to Roger Varian's yard in Newmarket to be trained. She didn't race as a young horse and returned to Ireland before being sent to Newmarket Sales in December 2021.
Ashkhabad's sire is Harzand (IRE), by Sea The Stars, who was a dual Derby winner (Epsom and Irish Derby, 2016). Her dam Athenaire (IRE), by Duke of Marmalade, descends from Sadler’s Wells and Aim for the Top, giving Ashkhabad a strong classic lineage. A half-sister to winners Able Lips and Amazing Lips, both successful on the flat, she was bred for great things.
Ashkhabad raced six times but didn't have the racing ability of her siblings and was retired in 2024 after finishing last at Newcastle. Rehomed with Rachel she headed to Cleveland for her new life and we've followed her progress with much interest.
Today Rachel sent us an update about her regally bred mare.
"Ashka news!" says Rachel. "She can now hack out on roads, tracks, through fields and woods for an hour, and come home without being drenched in sweat! Unless she is given a canter… then we have zero brakes and she gets verrry excited!"
