Elyian Flame, who won on the flat and over hurdles for Mick and David Easterby, was a winner at Beverely this afternoon. Now trained under a joint licence by Mick's granddaughters Sam and Jacqueline Coward the ten-year-old finished well up the Beverley hill to take the two-mile 140th Year Of The Watt Memorial Handicap under Joanna Mason at odds of 5/1.

"What a legend he is," said Joanna after the race. "He's go so much class. Sam and Jacqueline have done so well to get him back to the track."

Known to the staff as 'Smiler', Elysian Flame joined us as a yearling from Tattersalls December Foal Sale in 2016 and won four times before leaving to join Sam and Jacqueline. He last won at Newbury on the 16th of April 2021, one day short of five years ago!

Smiler's other victories came at Hamilton and Haydock on the flat and at Carlisle over hurdles, and in 2021 he was placed at Royal Ascot and Glorious Goodwood. He is now just £15 short of £125,000 in career earnings.
