Doncaster Racecourse, often called Town Moor, is one of the oldest and most historically important racing venues in Britain, with racing recorded there since the early 1600s. It sits on common land on the edge of Doncaster, a site that has hosted meetings for over four centuries and remains legally tied to the freemen of the town. The course became formally established after the corporation abandoned attempts to halt racing in 1614, and by the mid‑18th century it was already staging major events.
Its two most famous races are the Doncaster Cup, first run in 1766 and recognised as the oldest continuing regulated horse race in the world, and the St Leger Stakes, founded in 1776 and now the world’s oldest Classic. The St Leger forms the final leg of the British Triple Crown and remains the centrepiece of the four‑day September festival that draws large crowds every year. Doncaster also opens the flat turf season with the Lincoln Handicap and closes it with the November Handicap, giving it a unique place in the racing calendar.
The racecourse has evolved through wars, relocations of major races, and modern redevelopment. During the First World War it was used for military purposes, with substitute races held at Newmarket. In 1992 it staged Britain's first ever Sunday meeting, attracting 23,000 spectators despite the absence of betting. More recently it has undergone a £34 million redevelopment, including a five‑storey grandstand with hospitality suites, dining areas, and upgraded facilities that support both racing and year‑round events such as conventions and business gatherings.
