Racecourse Directory
Newmarket
Newmarket Racecourse occupies the heathland on the edge of the town and is the oldest major racing centre in Britain, with organised meetings dating back to the early seventeenth century. It developed under the patronage of Charles II, whose interest in the sport helped establish Newmarket as the headquarters of British Flat racing. The town’s training grounds, gallops and racing stables grew around the same period and still dominate the area today.
The racecourse is split into two separate tracks. The Rowley Mile is used in the spring and autumn and is known for its long, straight mile with a steady rise to the line and a pronounced dip a furlong out that can unbalance horses. It hosts the 2,000 Guineas and 1,000 Guineas each May, the first two Classics of the season. The July Course is used in midsummer and has a more undulating profile, with a tree‑lined approach and a slightly more relaxed atmosphere during the July Festival.
Both courses are right‑handed in their round sections but are best known for their long straights, which place emphasis on stamina and balance rather than tight turns. The wide expanses of the heath mean the tracks feel open and exposed, with few visual markers for horses or jockeys.
Newmarket’s fixture list is extensive, reflecting its role as the centre of the Flat season. The Guineas Festival in spring and the July Festival are its major meetings, supported by a busy programme of Group and Listed races. The racecourse buildings sit on the edge of the heath, with the modern grandstands overlooking the wide, open landscape that has shaped the sport there for more than three centuries.
