Epsom

Epsom Racecourse stands on the North Downs above the town and has staged racing since the seventeenth century. It became a major venue after the creation of the Oaks in 1779 and the Derby in 1780, which remain its defining races. The site is open downland with public access, so large crowds have always gathered on the Hill alongside racegoers in the stands.

The track is known for its irregular layout. The Derby course is a left‑handed mile and a half with significant undulations, a long climb to the top of the hill, the turn around Tattenham Corner and a camber in the straight that can shift horses off balance. The five‑furlong course is a steep, fast descent and is regarded as the quickest in Britain.

The Derby Festival in early June is the centre of the racecourse’s year, with the Oaks on Friday and the Derby on Saturday. These two Classics dominate the fixture list and define the course’s reputation. Outside the Festival, Epsom runs a small number of meetings through the summer and autumn.

The grandstand complex sits inside the track and provides wide views across the Downs. Despite modernisation, the racecourse retains the open, exposed character created by its position on common land and its long history of public access.
